Historical fiction book groups

We are all reading historical fiction books now. They cover a wide range of historical periods (shown in order below) - World War II - in Hawaii, on the east coast of the U.S., and in Denmark, the late 1800's in northern Michigan, the days of the Underground Railroad, and the 1930s in Mexico and California. I hope everyone is enjoying their book and learning a little bit about a different time in history.

More Guest Readers

We had a two more visitors come and read to us. First, Mr. Platte, the mayor of Eaton Rapids, visited. He talked about being mayor and some things that were going on around town. He read the book City Green about a community that cleaned up a vacant lot and planted a large garden in the middle of the city.

Later, Dr. DeFrance, the superintendent of our schools, came and read a book called Teammates about Jackie Robinson, the first African-American major league baseball player.
He also showed us the wide variety of books, magazines, and newspapers he reads for work and for fun. Wow - that's a lot of reading Dr. DeFrance. We're not sure where you find the time. Here he is with a stack of his favorite reading materials.

Guest Reader - Mrs. Graham

We had a visit from Mrs. Graham on Friday. She is a lawyer and answered lots of our questions about the law. One of the things I remember most is that on the bar exam, you have to answer 16 essay questions! Wow, that's a lot. She read The Gardner and Jennifer Jones Won't Leave Me Alone.

Dr. Hinkle reads "Jasmine"

We had our first guest reader for March is Reading Month. Dr. Hinkle, who has a veterinary practice in Charlotte, read the book "Jasmine". It is about a cat who is left alone in an empty house for several months, then rescued by The Humane Society and adopted by a loving family.
She also answered our questions about working as a vet. Thank you Dr. Hinkle.

Working towards our goal

We are steadily working towards our goal of reading 16,800 minutes this month. We also have a good idea for our door decoration, but we can't tell you right now - it's a secret. We'll post some pictures later.

We've got some cool guest readers lined up for the month. We are going to have some community members come in and read us a book and hopefully let us ask some questions about their job. So far we have a veterinarian, a lawyer, our curriculum director, and the mayor!! How exciting.

Also, look back here in a few days and there will be some Mission to Mars pictures posted.

Here are our mission patches. Ms. Kane's class's patch (Apollo 25) was designed by Beau. Mrs. Darrow's class's patch (Red Planet) was designed by Samantha.
